CACHE COUNTY — An elderly man died after he fell and hit his head during a hike in Cache County Saturday.

Calvin Kunz, 77, was hiking with some family and friends in the Franklin Basin area on Saturday, June 9, when the fall occurred, according to the Cache County Sheriff’s Office.

Kunz and his group had collected some garbage left behind by other hikers during their hike. While Kunz was crossing a river, he tried to pass off some garbage to another person. He lost his balance, fell, and struck his head, the sheriffs office said in a news release.

Kunz never regained consciousness and died at the scene.

Other hikers, including an off-duty Roy police officer and his wife, who is an EMT, attempted medical care at the scene. A local doctor also arrived and used his satelitte phone to call authorities, the release said.

“Our condolences and thoughts are with all those involved in this incident,” the Cache County Sheriff’s Office said.
